Today the fetal pig lab was collected. We also took up the circulatory system disorders and technology worksheet from last week. We then began the respiratory system. There will be a quiz on the circulatory and respiratory systems on Wednesday.

Students, please note that the exercise lab was due today (Friday). If you didn't get it done in time, you'll need to complete it this weekend. Remember that you need to graph the data. On your graph you need 2 y-axis's: One for blood pressure and one for pulse rate. You will have 3 llines on your graph so try using 3 different colours and provide a key or legend. Your x-axis will be for time (duration of exercise). You will complete the analysis, evaluation and synthesis sections of the lab (these can be found with the lab in the textbook). You only need to answer h, i and k questions from the synthesis section.

Also, remember that the fetal pig dissection lab questions are due on Monday. I need time to get all these labs marked before Friday's Lab Exam!

On Thursday and Friday, students completed the fetal pig dissection. The lab questions for this lab are due on Monday.

On Wednesday the students completed an activity involving circulatory system diseases and technologies. We then began to prepare for the fetal pig dissection.

On Tuesday students worked on the analysis, evaluation, and synthesis components of the exercise lab. The lab report is due on Friday.

On Monday students performed the Effects of Exercise on Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate lab.

On Friday, students planned an investigation into how exercise affects blood pressure and pulse rate. We also reviewed how to design a controlled experiment. The lab will be performed on Monday. Our 3 "runners" need to make sure they wear proper clothes and footwear for running.

On Thursday, students copied a note on blood pressure, the blood vessels, and the components of blood. They then were able to try measuring their own blood pressure using our kits.

On Wednesday we viewed some open heart surgery on YouTube. Students also completed a review on the circulatory system.

Today we reviewed heart anatomy and then students worked on a heart coloring and labeling activity.

Today we went over the human circulatory system. Students learned about the functions and components of the circulatory system. They then learned the parts of the human heart.

On Friday, students wrote the digestion quiz and then we began to discuss the circulatory system.

Today students finished the work on their Crohn's disease information table. We then discussed a range of digestive disorders as shown on page 190 of their textbooks. Students were also given a review sheet for tomorrow's digestion quiz....yes, you have a quiz tomorrow!

Today we took up some digestive system homework from yesterday. Students then read about the role of the liver, gall bladder and pancreas in digestion. They answered a few questions related to these topics. Finally, we read together about a digestive disorder known as Crohn's disease. Students were given a homework assignment related to this disease.

Today we took up Friday's homework on the digestive system. We then discussed where food molecules are digested and students completed a table on this topic.

On Friday, we discussed the table on the digestive organs that students completed for homework on Thursday. We then viewed a film from the Body Atlas on the digestive system. Finally, students completed a set of handouts on the digestive system. This is homework if it didn't get finished. A few of you need to finish your microorganism project and 2 of you need to put together a proper APA list of your sources for your project. Make sure you get this done this weekend. Today we began the human digestive system. We discussed the four stages of digestion and then students used their textbooks to compile a list of features common to the parts of the digestive system.

A few of you still need to hand in your microorganism project and some of you need to provide me a list of your sources in APA format. Get this done tonight!

Today we began the new unit by reviewing organs and organ systems. Students learned about homeostasis and they then began to complete a "placemat" activity on pyschoactive drugs and their effects on homeostasis.

On Tuesday, students wrote the protists and fungi test. After the test, we viewed our cultured bacteria colonies using the microscopes.

On Monday we reviewed for the protist and fungi test.

On Friday, students had their final work period on the microbiology project which is due on Monday May 11th.

On Thursday we finished off the microbiology unit by looking at human and ecological applications of fungi.

Today we took up the protist application questions. We then began looking at Kingdom Fungi. Students copied a note and we discussed the features of fungi! Fun, fun, fun, fungi!!!!

Today students worked on the 3 application questions that are related to protists. We will be discussing these applications tomorrow.

On Monday, students worked at completing their protist lab. This is due on Tuesday. Some began to work on a set of application questions related to protists. This work will continue on Tuesday.

On Friday, students continued to complete their note on protists. They then viewed a variety of protists under the microscopes and some began to answer the lab questions. This lab is due on Tuesday. Have a great weekend!

Today, we looked at some videos of protists and discussed this diverse group of microorganisms. Students then copied a note and began to work on completing a flowchart about the 3 main groups of protists. This will continue tomorrow along with a protist microscope lab.

On Wednesday, students wrote the first microbiology test. They then read about protists in their textbooks.

On Tuesday, students reviewed for the microbiology test. They played a Jeopardy review game and worked on review questions.

Today students completed the lab "Microorganisms in Our Environment". We will see what bacteria are growing in our school environment! Yikes!
Students also began reviewing for Wednesday's test. You will continue to review for the test tomorrow in class. Be sure you study for this test!
Your microbiology test is on Wednesday. It's a big test! It is on Taxonomy, Viruses, Archaebacteria and Eubacteria. You may want to review connections between viruses and bacteria and the following topics: human health issues, industrial applications, ecological roles, biotechnology applications. (Hint, hint!) There is an extensive application section on your test.

On Friday, students received their report cards and we spent some time going through the reflection page that goes with reports. We talked a lot about community service hours.
We then took up the homework from Thursday about the immune system. Students then read about antibiotic resistant bacteria and we watched a short video about this and the link to evolution of bacteria. They then learned how to prepare agar plates for culturing bacteria which we will do on Monday.

On Thursday we continued to look at how bacteria and viruses are used in biotechnology. Students then copied a note on the immune system and began to answer 2 questions about the components of our immune system.

On Tuesday we discussed the conceptmaps the students created on Monday. We then began to look at how we use bacteria in biotechnology.

Wednesday is a PA day.

On Monday, students finished looking at bacterial shapes using the microscopes. They then created a concept map on the Beneficial Roles of Bacteria.

Friday was the final research class for the microbiology project.

On Thursday we continued to watch the film Outbreak and discuss the relevance of this film in terms of viruses and human health.

Today we viewed the film "Outbreak". This film shows how viruses can mutate within a population and lead to an epidemic.

On Tuesday we took up the last cells test and finished the bacteria note.

On Thursday, students had a research class for their microbiology project.

Today we continued looking at bacteria. Students read an article about archaebacteria living under the ocean floor and they answered some questions related to it. We then went through more of the bacteria note. Tomorrow you will be researching your microbiology project.

On Friday students began researching a project on a disease caused by a microorganism. This project will be due in about 3 weeks.

On Thursday, grade 10's wrote the OSSLT, so we didn't have class.

Today we took up some homework questions and then went through the virus note from yesterday with more detail. Remember, tomorrow is the grade 10 literacy test. You will only have class during period 4 and 5.

Today students went through a note on viruses. They viewed two on line animations about viruses as well. The note can be found posted here on the blog under course notes. Students answered #1-3, and 6-8 on page 107. This is homework if not done.

Today we viewed an episode of the Nature of Things on microorganisms. Students then completed activity 2.2 in the textbook...another dichotomous key activity. This is homework if not done. Remember to print off the virus note for tomorrow's class.

On Friday, students wrote the membrane transport and cell respiration/photosynthesis test.

On Thursday we began the new Microbiology unit. We took a note on Taxonomy and then did a fun alien dichotomous key activity.

On Wednesday we reviewed for Friday's test.

Today we reviewed cellular respiration and photosynthesis first by completing a Gizmo on the SmartBoard. We took up the worksheets from yesterday. We also set a test date for this Friday. We will review tomorrow for this test. REMINDER: Your osmosis lab report is now overdue!

On Monday, students completed an activity on cellular respiration and photosynthesis using their textbooks.

Today students worked on writing up the analysis/evaluation/synthesis of the osmosis lab. This lab report is due on the monday when you return to school. Remember, you must create two graphs for the two parts of the lab. When you do this, put % mass change on the y-axis and solute concentration on the x-axis for part 1, and temperature on the x-axis for part 2.

Today students completed part 2 of the osmosis lab. Tomorrow, you will be analysing the results, so bring your lab sheets to class with you.

Today students learned more about osmosis. They were then given an open book "pop quiz" on the membrane transport mechanisms. We then began planning an osmosis lab that will be performed tomorrow.

Today students completed two "gizmos": one on diffusion and one on osmosis. They then read a handout about osmosis and answered questions related to osmosis.

Today students shared their summaries on their assigned membrane transport mechanism. They created notes on the Smart Board and this note will be provided to everyone on Monday. It was too large a file to share on the blog so I've printed a copy for each of you. Remember to finish your Food Journal activity sheet if you haven't already handed it in.

Today we took up part of the cells test. Students then paired up and worked on summarizing a type of membrane transport mechanism. Pairs of students will then present their summaries to the class tomorrow.

On Tuesday we discussed proteins and nucleic acids. Students then answered #5-9 from page 35.

Today students updated their food journals. We then reviewed carbohydrates and lipids. The class watched several good YouTube videos on these topics. Please make sure you have questions 1, 3, and 4 on page 35 done for homework.

Happy snow day #2! Your homework is to keep adding to your food journal. If you don't have it at home, just write down everything you eat each day. Try to estimate how many servings of fruits/vegs, grains, dairy, and meat/alternatives, and how many glasses of water you drink for each day. Have a great weekend!

Today the class finished watching SuperSize Me. We will take up the answers to the movie questions tomorrow. They then read about carbs and lipids and answered a few textbook questions. Remember to continue to keep your food journal up to date. Fill it in every day for the next 7 days.

On Friday students worked with microscopes. They began by labeling a diagram of a microscope and then completing a table about the functions of the parts of a microscope. They then read about proper use of a microscope, staining techniques, and biological drawings. Finally, they practiced using them and looked at a variety of slides. This lab will continue on Monday. Today students completed their cell analogies and handed them in.

Today I collected the Virtual Cell Tour assignment. Some of you will still need to finish this tonight and hand it in tomorrow. Students labeled diagrams of animal and plant cells. They then completed an analogy activity for a town that produces "widgets" and how each part is like a part of the cell. Then students, in pairs, began working on their own analogy. This little project will continue tomorrow.

Today students worked on completing the virtual cell tour assignment. This is due tomorrow, so if you are not done, you will need to finish it using your home computer.

Today we went over the cell theory and examined 4 types of microscopes. We then began the Virtual Cell Tour assignment. The rest of this assignment will be completed tomorrow in the computer lab.
